3 piece wheels: the short answer

3 piece wheels are built from three separate parts: an outer lip (outer rim half), a center (the face and spokes), and an inner barrel half. The three pieces bolt together at flanged joints and the joints are sealed so the tire holds air. “3 piece” describes construction, not how the metal was formed — the parts can be cast, flow formed or forged.

Custom 3 piece forged wheels use forged aluminum (or magnesium) centers and barrels so width, lip depth and offset can be built to a brief. They differ from a monoblock (one piece) and from a 2 piece forged wheel (center plus one barrel). Our 2-piece vs 3-piece comparison sits alongside this guide.

What are 3 piece wheels made of?

Most road-going 3 piece wheels use aluminum alloy for the center and barrels. Forged 3 piece sets start with forged blanks that are CNC machined into the face and rim halves, then bolted and sealed. Cast 3 piece designs exist too; they are still “3 piece,” but the metal was poured, not forged. Always ask how each part was made.

The seal at each flange is critical. The tire cavity must stay airtight across the joint, so makers use sealant and carefully torqued assembly hardware. Owners should follow the maker’s torque and inspection guidance if a wheel is ever taken apart.

Custom 3 piece wheels vs catalog

Catalog 3 piece wheels offer a menu of lips, centers and barrels. Custom 3 piece forged wheels go further: the center design, width, offset and finish are drawn for your car. That matters when you need a deep lip and an exact offset for flush fitment, or when brake clearance forces a specific spoke and barrel shape.

Fitment still follows the same rules as any wheel. Check width and offset with the wheel offset calculator, confirm bolt pattern and center bore, and verify caliper clearance with the brake clearance guide. Flush look is covered in flush fitment.

Sealing, hardware and ownership

Because air must cross bolted flanges, assembly quality matters. Use the hardware and sealant the maker specifies, and do not casually disassemble a tubeless 3 piece wheel without a plan to reseal it. Some owners never open the joints; others rebuild after a lip change. Either way, treat the flanges as a service item, not decoration.

Finish work also differs: lips, centers and barrels can be finished separately before assembly, which is why multi-piece builds often show contrasting lip and face colors.

When 3 piece forged wheels make sense

For many daily and track cars, a forged monoblock is simpler: no joint hardware and no sealant to age. Choose 3 piece when the lip, repairability or modular build is the point — not because “3 piece” automatically means stronger. Strength depends on alloy, forging, heat treatment, design and the load rating for your vehicle.

3 piece forged wheels FAQ

What are 3 piece wheels?

Wheels assembled from an outer lip, a center and an inner barrel, bolted and sealed at the flanges.

Are 3 piece wheels the same as forged?

No. 3 piece is construction. Forged is how the metal was formed. Ask for both.

Do 3 piece wheels leak air?

They should not when assembled and sealed correctly. Joints need proper sealant and hardware torque; that is the main maintenance difference from a monoblock.

Can I change the lip later?

Often yes on a true 3 piece design, by swapping the outer lip and resealing — confirm with the maker for your specific set.

How do 3 piece wheels compare to 2 piece?

3 piece separates outer lip and inner barrel; 2 piece uses one barrel with a center. See our comparison guide.

Can VEXORA build custom 3 piece forged wheels?

Yes, as fully custom forged sets in aluminum or magnesium when the brief calls for multi-piece construction. Every VEXORA set is made to order, and custom orders start from a single pair. MOQ: 1 pair (2 wheels). Production typically takes approximately 20 days once the specification, drawings and finish are approved, confirmed per project. Shipping time varies by destination country. Where DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is available for your country, orders ship DDP: import duties and taxes are handled and the wheels are delivered to your door.
