Forged concave wheels: the short answer
Deeper concavity is mostly a design and fitment choice, not a performance upgrade. Forged concave wheels are forged wheels whose face sits deeper toward the hub, creating a recessed spoke plane and a more aggressive outer lip. That changes how the face looks and how much room the spokes leave for big brake kits — it is not a separate manufacturing process from forging itself.
Because face depth interacts with width, offset and brake clearance, put it in the fitment brief early. Custom forged programs can draw face depth to the car instead of forcing a catalog dish. Related: monoblock, 2-piece, 3-piece, finishes.
| Term | Plain meaning | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Concave / dish | Face and spoke plane sit inward toward the hub | Deeper look; changes spoke-to-caliper space |
| Lip depth | Visible outer rim section outside the face | Stance and style; still limited by width and ET |
| Face depth | How far the pad/spoke plane is recessed | Design language; packaging for BBK |
| Offset (ET) | Where the whole wheel sits relative to hub | Concave does not replace correct ET |
Mild, medium or deep: which face suits your build?

| Face depth | Look | Packaging notes | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild | Subtle inward sweep; restrained lip | Often easier to package with stock-ish brakes and daily ride height | May look flat in photos taken from aggressive angles |
| Medium | Clearly recessed spoke plane; visible lip | Common street compromise when width and ET are planned together | Still needs axle-specific brake and inner clearance checks |
| Deep | Strong dish; tall outer lip appearance | Often wants more width and careful spoke/barrel packaging | Highest risk of caliper or inner interference if copied from a photo alone |
These labels are visual language, not industry standards. Send reference photos. Face depth is not the same as wheel position — flush vs poke is still an offset/width decision (flush fitment).
Does a deeper concave face improve performance?
No — not by itself. Concavity describes face shape and packaging. It does not establish lower rotating mass, higher strength, or better braking. Strength and stiffness depend on the full design (sections, spoke layout, construction) and on the validation that applies to that configuration — not on how deep the dish looks in a photo.
Choose deeper faces for the look you want and the clearance envelope you can prove. If weight or track use is the primary goal, say so in the brief so construction and material can be discussed honestly — including 6061-T6 forged wheels and magnesium vs aluminum.
Concave is not offset
You can have a deep concave face with a high positive ET (tucked) or a lower ET (more poke). Decide flush vs poke with the flush fitment guide and the offset calculator, then set face depth as a design input. Wider barrels usually give more room for lip and dish — a narrow front on a staggered set often runs a shallower face than a wide rear (staggered fitment).

What to send for a brake-clearance check
Deeper faces can help or hurt caliper clearance depending on spoke shape and barrel profile. Diameter alone is not enough. For each axle, send:
- Brake kit make/model (or OEM brakes) and rotor diameter if known
- Side and face-on photos of the caliper relative to the current wheel/spokes
- Proposed wheel diameter, width, offset and target face depth (with reference images)
- Tire sizes planned for each rim width
- Any template, drawing or shop clearance notes you already have
- Note full-lock steering and daily vs show use

Design and fitment checklist
- Target look: mild, medium or deep (use reference photos, not only adjectives)
- Front vs rear: staggered widths often need different face depths
- Offset and poke/flush goal per axle
- Brake kit details and clearance photos
- Tire section width planned for each rim width
- Finish direction — finishes
- Construction preference: monoblock vs 2-piece vs 3-piece
Every VEXORA set is made to order, and custom orders start from a single pair. MOQ: 1 pair (2 wheels). Face depth, width and offset can be set independently when the set is fully custom forged.
Why custom forged helps concave specs
Catalog concave wheels sell fixed dish depths and a limited ET grid. If your car needs an uncommon width, a specific center bore, or a face that clears a large caliper while staying flush, catalog options shrink quickly.
VEXORA builds 100% custom forged aluminum and magnesium wheels. Every VEXORA set is made to order, and custom orders start from a single pair. MOQ: 1 pair (2 wheels). Production typically takes approximately 20 days once the specification, drawings and finish are approved, confirmed per project. Shipping time varies by destination country. Where DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is available for your country, orders ship DDP: import duties and taxes are handled and the wheels are delivered to your door. VEXORA does not keep a stock catalog or ready-to-ship inventory. Every wheel is engineered and forged to your vehicle, dimensions and finish. Start at custom forged wheels or go to request a quote. Common mistakes
- Choosing maximum dish from a photo without measuring brakes and inner clearance
- Copying a friend’s concave depth onto a different width or ET
- Assuming spacers will create concave — spacers change effective offset, not face machining
- Ignoring seat type and hub bore while chasing lip depth
- Skipping load-rating discussion on wide, deep-dish track-oriented designs
Monoblock vs multi-piece for deep faces
Monoblock forged concave wheels machine the face and barrel from one forging. Deep looks are still possible inside a single structure. 2-piece and 3-piece builds can use a forged center with a deep outer rim section — which is why many deep-dish photos are multi-piece. Neither route is automatically better: service preference, sealing, weight targets and budget all matter.
Finish amplifies concave
A brushed or polished lip against a painted center makes dish read deeper in photos. Two-tone edges are finish tools, not substitutes for correct ET — see finishes.
Staggered concave pairs
A common street look is a milder front and a deeper rear on a wider rim. Spec each axle.
Show vs daily packaging
Show cars sometimes push dish to the limit of fender and brake clearance. Daily drivers usually need margin for potholes, passengers and full-lock steering. Say which use case you are building for.
Forged concave wheels FAQ
Applying concave face language on a vehicle brief: Porsche 911 · Mustang · BMW · Corvette.
Are deeper concave wheels better for performance?
Not inherently. Face depth is primarily a styling and packaging choice. Compare actual mass, dimensions, load suitability and engineering information rather than treating a deeper face as a performance specification.
Does a wider wheel always have a deeper face?
No. Width is only one part of the geometry. Offset, mounting-pad layout, spoke design and brake clearance also influence the available face profile. Review the proposed design rather than using width alone to predict concavity.
Can the front and rear wheels have the same concavity?
That depends on each axle's wheel dimensions and brake packaging. Request a front/rear design comparison before approval. A coordinated appearance may be possible without identical face depth.
Will a deep concave face clear a big brake kit?
Face depth alone cannot answer that. Supply the exact kit ID, rotor dimensions, caliper measurements and a clearance template where available. Both spoke-to-caliper and barrel-to-brake clearance need review.
What should I send with my reference image?
Include your vehicle and modifications, front/rear wheel diameter, width and offset, confirmed PCD and center bore, tire sizes and brake details. Label current specifications separately from requested specifications so the review starts from clear information.
What are the minimum order and timing?
MOQ is 1 pair. Allow approximately 20 days for production after approval, with transit and customs timing considered separately. Ask about DDP availability for your destination when requesting a quote.
